In February 2017, I was in the printshop at Mass Moca, making prints of the head of the victory goddess Nike
The radio was on. I heard the Speaker of the House tell Senator Elizabeth Warren to shut up and sit down; then the Senate voted to silence her.
The impact of the news, of the senator’s silencing, compelled me to drop a black ‘ink’ hood over Nike’s head.
Printing the black hood images continued for several days, initially as a symbol of female censorship...
...moving onto being expressions of silencing, religious fervor, historical and present day racism, terrorism, and public degradation.
